Author Guidelines

Hello Author,

It’s time to publish your book. Consider submitting a camera ready manuscript to the publisher for printing. A camera ready manuscript means that what is submitted to the printer will be printed exactly as it is. If a camera ready is not submitted, the author/publisher incurs typesetting fees. While to produce the camera ready document requires some additional work, the benefits are in saving thousands of dollars in production costs. At the same time, the writer gets to participate in the intricate selection of certain details of the printing/publication process, an experience not always afforded the author. Here are some guidelines to consider as you approach the completion of your camera ready manuscript.

Title Page – This is what readers first see when they open the book. It can be the title, a quotation of your choice, a scripture or a saying you like. Usually it’s the title or the title along with something else. Choose something important to you. If you have no preference, it should be the book title.

Dedication – It’s your book , so you can dedicate it to whomever you like – or no one at all. Say what you what in a brief paragraph form (a sentence or two is best). Longer addresses should be saved for the acknowledgment section.

Acknowledgments – Take your time and thank everybody you want. Feel free to write an entire page or two, or you can write a few lines. Remember, it’s your book; take your time and pour love out your heart on to the page.

Table of Contents – For prose, your editor/publisher can help with this. For poetry, the poet usually has a sequential feel for the order of the poems. If you choose, you can place them in randomly. Generally, this is your chance to impact the audience my the order you choose. Take the readers on a journey, and drop them off at your destination. If you have a title piece, consider placing as the first or last entry, but the final decision is up to you.

Preface – As author, you can use this section to set up for the reader the scope and purpose of the text. Describe or outline why you wrote the book and/or what its goal is to accomplish. For example, if the focus is your life and/or personal experience, start specific and move to a general association that relates to the reader. You may choose instead to talk about the progress you when through while crafting the book, the impact of its present manifestation, and the future (or prophetic) role you anticipate the source will play. Again, its your book; you can decide not to include a preface. It’s up to you.

Foreword – The foreword accomplishes basically the same thing as the preface. So then, you can choose to have a forward instead of a preface or both. Both are utilized when the author has something to say to or set-up for the reader, but also wants someone in addition to talk about the author and/or the work. Like the preface, the forward can be a short paragraph or pages along – it’s your choice. Whomever you choose, it is important that he/she intimately knows, understands and perceives the scope and/or depth of the write or the writer’s work.

Introduction – If you employ the preface and/or the forward, an introduction is only necessary if you have another person you want to address the audience. The introducer can present you and/or the work.

Title Page – This page is purely technical and is usually set-up by the publisher. It includes copywrite and publishing information. As author, you may choose to set up this page, but generally the author should enjoy the creative aspects of the project and leave the tedious to the publisher.

Cover Layout/Design – This should be fun; it’s about colors, textures and fonts. Choose colors and textures that mean something special to you. Your layout can be a template or full color design. Consult publisher for details.
